Welcome to Homes for the Holidays 2022
Welcome Message from our Honorary Chair, Sharon McGarry
Celebrating an Astonishing Anniversary.
It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 20th anniversary of the iconic Homes for the Holidays event.
Two decades ago, as a member of the Hospice board, I was honored to co-chair with Lillian Smith an ambitious plan she presented for a three-day tour of tony Ottawa homes decorated to the nines for the holidays. Along with dedicated members of the May Court Club of Ottawa a meticulous plan was crafted. Over the years the tour has even included a peek into 24 Sussex Drive with Sheila Martin, wife of Prime Minister Paul Martin.
Fast forward to today, where Homes for the Holidays is a marquee event for Hospice Care Ottawa, raising over $2.5 million. Organizers recently adapted to the crippling effects of COVID by offering astounding virtual tours which allow supporters to view the decorated homes from the comfort of their own living room.
It has been my privilege to sponsor homes since year one including the popular Pop Up Shop since 2011. Proceeds from the tours are a vital financial resource, allowing dedicated staff and volunteers at our three Hospice sites to provide comfort and free end-of-life support to members of our community. This year, visitors will virtually see eight outstanding homes with just a click of their finger.
A very special shout out to the homeowners who have opened their doors throughout the years, the generous florists and designers who worked their magic and especially to the army of volunteers whose enthusiasm and support help make this annual event a grand success.
Visit hospicecareottawa.ca to learn about programs and glimpse the meaning of hospice’s mandate ‘When Comfort Matters Most”. We look forward to our 20 plus one anniversary, when hopefully COVID retreats and in-home tours return. I especially look forward to greeting you at this year’s Pop Up Shop at the Hellenic Centre, where there is ample parking and tables heaped with unique gifts, specialty foods and handmade treasures from local vendors.
See you there!

Built in 2006 on the Carp Ridge, this log home is a well-balanced blend of ruggedness and elegance. It was designed from a collection of pictures depicting features that would become part of the owner’s dream home. The white pine logs came from the forests around Cobden and stones from an historic Lanark house were retrieved to build interior and exterior walls, which complement the natural logs. Rooms are staggered to expose more logs and to create an interesting architectural detail. Numerous windows in the home showcase the Gatineau Hills, the surrounding forest, and the spectacular 200-year-old maple that stands guard in the front yard. Traditional and antique furniture, interesting lighting fixtures - including Swarovski crystal chandeliers - and oriental rugs are an elegant contrast to the ruggedness of logs and stone. A welcoming warmth, a sense of peace, and a connection to nature - these are at the heart of this home.

It is easy to see why this home is the preferred destination for family gatherings. From the coffered ceilings in the den and the dining room to the custom fireplace to the great room that incorporates the kitchen, family room, and dining room, to the outdoor kitchen/bbq area, it is a home that’s built for entertaining family and friends. When the owners purchased the home, they installed wood beams that came from reclaimed wood from a local mushroom farm, matching the wood to the hardwood floor and shelving around the fireplace. The beams, along with the custom fireplace and stone give the room a cozy ski-chalet feel. Summers are spent in the backyard where the pool, hot tub, and screened-in porch create a little cottage in the city.

Part of the Old Ottawa South neighbourhood since 1927, this century-old home was designed and built by Ottawa architect David Younghusband in his classic Arts and Crafts style. Featuring a centre hall plan, extensive original woodworking, and French doors, it has been seamlessly renovated and updated while staying true to the original design and architecture. The front foyer provides a warm welcome to visitors and an opportunity to see the white oak woodworking that is featured throughout the house. Surrounded with plate railing and wood lathing, the bow window in the dining room invites additional sunlight. At the centre of this room an arts and crafts-style family dining suite is set with Ansley china and ruby red glassware. The living room is graced by white oak and marble fireplace and built-in cabinetry, with a music area for the family piano. Cherry cabinetry, spacious workspaces, and island seating, which accommodate the owners’ love of cooking and entertaining, feature in the upscale kitchen. The sunroom and family room provide numerous options to find comfort, with large windows to view the natural stone wall and landscaping of the back patio. This home provides a perfect setting to display the family’s traditional decorations and flowers to celebrate the holiday season.

While elegant, contemporary, and eclectic fit this cottage in the city to a T, above all else, it’s a warm family home. Enter the ground floor, renovated in 2004 by Astro Design, into a lovely family room which has now adapted to a grown family, complete with home theatre, pool table, indoor pool, and gym. The south-facing solarium opens into a large back yard with pergola and fire table.
With its reverse layout, most of the living space is on the second floor. As you leave the front hall, the accent brick wall repeats itself in the stunning kitchen designed by Flynn Architect in 2011. It boasts solid dark wood cabinetry and Carrera marble countertops with a magnificent waterfall island, ideal for hosting dinner parties.
The open-concept leads to a two-storey living room and wrap-around balcony, perfect for spending lazy afternoons by the Ottawa River. This inviting room with loft overlooking the grand piano has served as an exquisite venue for intimate concerts many times over.

The owners of this quiet “country home in the city” grew up in Westboro but always dreamed of a more spacious environment for their young son and daughter. Out for a drive in North Gower one day, they chanced upon the Craftsman-style house and immediately knew it was “the one.” They have enjoyed curating the home to their tastes and needs. The great room boasts a 12-foot vaulted ceiling fit for a show-stopping Christmas tree that grazes the peak. Family and friends gather for dinners at the locally made, 10-foot reclaimed wood harvest table, and the open concept main level ensures everyone can enjoy the company. Thrifted and vintage finds give the home a comfortable character and a warm, inviting feel. In the summer, the owners are often found relaxing on the front porch to enjoy the lively gardens and planters.

This 2300-square foot, superior quality apartment on the banks of the Rideau Canal occupies a piece of Ottawa history. The large and diverse collection of Canadian art is skillfully displayed on the many walls.

Designed and built by the original owner/architect in 1968, this home was given a complete makeover by the current owners in 2000. The home is surrounded by beautiful gardens which they designed and planted themselves - adding to the green space of the golf course that lies just beyond their back yard. The home is bright and airy with large windows throughout that look out over the lush gardens. Entering through the front doors, one is greeted by the open living area which boasts cathedral ceilings finished with red cedar and a floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace housing two fireplaces. The eclectic collection of mainly Canadian art is eye catching - from Inuit pieces purchased during the owners’ travels, to works by local artists and friends, to the framed photographs taken by one of the owners while vacationing abroad over the years.
